It has been just over two years since opening a Netflix account. Overall it has been an outstanding service. For the most part I have no complaints, except one small one.
After opening the account some 25 months ago I checked the Netflix Top 100 list. At the time the number one movie was Crash. The critically acclaimed Crash was released in September of 2005 to DVD.
Fast forward to May 2008 and Crash is still holding the number one spot. Having checked periodically it has never budged from the top. How is this possible? Is it that popular of a flick?

I am so sick of seeing Crash at the top. I would like to go to the top 100 and actually see something new that I might like to rent. But that will not be possible. Even the most popular new releases never has anything- and within the last 3 months is usually old movies that I don’t care about. Basically, my gripe is that I have to remember what I want to rent because it is not a comprehensive selection. I love Netflix, though. Overall I am very happy with it.

As I understand it, Crash is perpetually number 1 due to the nature of online ranking. It’s ranked number one so more people rent it, and since more people rent it, it’s ranked number one. Feedback loop. Netflix should consider filtering rentals that were added directly from the top 100 page in their statistics.

Overall, I’m happy with Netflix too, but I think the top 100 is a complete joke. Here we are 2 days shy of a year since this post was written and guess what’s still number 1? You got it: Crash!
Why isn’t there a weekly top rentals list? The only way you can get it is through Facebook. Odd.
The Netflix new release list isn’t much better. For instance, “Taken”, the number one film of this week, isn’t even on the “Popular New Releases” list.
Netflix the company is awesome. But Netflix the website needs a serious overhaul.

It’s September 2009 and Crash is still at the top!
Tom’s solution is the perfect fix.
