Beware updating iPod 1.2.2 before iTunes 7.5

November 13th, 2007 · 27 Comments

*Update*  Apple has since released a 1.2.3 version which also appeared to fix this problem.    In March Apple released another update 1.3 which should also solve any issues that 1.2.2 caused.  Good luck.

Apple has released an iPod software update, version 1.2.2. This update is supposed to have some ‘bug fixes’. How important these fixes are to the enjoyment of your iPod is still undetermined.

5th Generation iPodMany users, myself included, have experienced an issue after installing the update where all the iPod menus are now blank even though it appears to have been properly synced with iTunes. This renders the iPod completely useless and unplayable.

The problem seems to occur when Windows users with 5th generation iPods install the 1.2.2 update before installing the 7.5 update to iTunes.

To avoid this problem install the iTunes 7.5 update and restart before applying the 1.2.2 update to your iPod.

If you’ve already installed 1.2.2 and are suffering from this problem then update iTunes to the current 7.5, restart Windows, and resynch your iPod.

UPDATE: There was an older update in 2002 from Apple that also carried a version number of 1.2.2. This was for the setting the maximum volume for the European market.

Ah, this really helped alot. Unfortunately, I have no interest in updating iTunes…or lowering my volume. Is it possible to go back to 1.2.1?

  • 2 error // Nov 13, 2007 at 6:22 pm

The EU volume thing was a ‘feature’ in an iPod 1.2.2 Software Update from October 2002 (!). This is a 2007 update with the same version number. I think you have mixed things up.

Addition: link to the old 1.2.2 updater http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=120123 - don’t confuse it with the one iTunes is offering you now.

Looks like you are correct, the maximum volume was from 2002, this new update has ‘bug fixes’. I shall correct the post. Thanks.

I also have this problem. So is it impossible to get my iPod to work without deleting all my music currently on it?

  • 6 Brittc // Nov 14, 2007 at 11:03 am

I downloaded the 1.2.2 software and now my music is not showing up on my ipod. Is there ANY way i can delete this program off of my ipod and just go back to the old one?

    Brilliant! Got it to work.

All you need to do is update iTunes to version 7.5, and plug in your iPod. After I disconnected it, all my songs were back on it.

I am so upset!!! I was also using my ipod as a hard drive and had saved lots of pictures and mpeg movies of my kids I made from my digital camera. All these were deleted from the ipod, so now these are lost forever since I don’t have any other backups. They were not saved on my laptop.

i had to figure this out on my own, i called the ipod tech support and the guy didnt know what to do. He had me reformat my ipod 3 times, before i hung up on the guy. Wasted 30 mins on that guy.

  • 16 Rob // Nov 15, 2007 at 10:27 am

i sincerely felt like shooting myself in the foot after i read this article AND had already reformated my ipod 3 times. all that time wasted *sigh*. Thanks a ton for the info

If you are using Windows 2000, you cannot update iTune to Ver 7.5. Ver 7.5 is only supported on XP and Vista machines. If you have already installed the new update on your iPod on a Windows 2000 computer and it has destroyed your iPod, you are screwed until Apple gets around to publishing a fix for this.
    Thanks a lot Steve J!! You A-hole!!!

Thanks so much! I had this same issue and was freaking out. Now my iPod is back to life.

  • 19 Ray // Nov 16, 2007 at 12:25 am

Yeah! I just found out about this and I had 7.4 it really, really sucks. I’m glad I backed up all my junk with the anapod explorer thingy. I’m really glad I did, but It sucks that I have to spend my time to re-do everything.

  • 20 Delawn // Nov 16, 2007 at 3:38 am

    OMG! You saved my IPod!!!
    Thanks for the info!!!

Apple screws up again and it’s posted under ‘Petty Gripes’ Doesn’t Apple ever release software and updates that don#t screw everyone. First my MacBook Pro and now my ipod. I sincerely wish I hadn’t backed mysekf into the proprietary Apple corner. but I guess it’s easier to stick with Apple than change OS. Pah!

  • 22 IM SO SICK OF DIZ BS // Nov 16, 2007 at 8:46 pm

man how the FUCK do i restart my ipod

Fodd: I should have been more specific in the article. The iTunes 7.5 install requires a restart of Windows in order to complete. But for the record to ‘restart’ an iPod hold down the menu and center button. After about 5 seconds it will restart or reboot.

  • 23 Sue // Nov 17, 2007 at 5:47 am

For those who have Windows 2000 you can fix the problem if you can access a computer with Windows XP. If you can access a computer with windows XP download the 7.5 update and then hit restore. It will ask if you want to restore to your factory settings. Click yes. This will set you back to the 1.2.1 update. Once you have done this you can go back to your computer with Windows 2000 and resync. All your songs etc will come back. Did this last night and it worked great after IPOD being down for two days.

I have had to downgrade to 1.2.1 again as my playlists song order became messed up when playing through my car stereo - did not play the same order as it appears in the playlist with 1.2.2.

  • 25 thomas // Nov 18, 2007 at 2:19 pm

I’ll never buy an ipod again. My 30gb 5th gen lost the menus on update as well.

I’ll get a Zune next. Did you hear that all Zunes get updated with the software available in newer versions? Apple won’t update the software in 5th gens with the features available in newer versions such as loading all songs by the current artist during shuffle.

  • 26 josh // Nov 20, 2007 at 8:47 am

FWIW — it happens on Mac OS X as well as Windows.

  • 27 Barry // Dec 3, 2007 at 7:05 pm

I had the same problem above, all music disappeared but now it’s back. I did nothing. I am trying to install the 7.5, but it can’t complete the install (appears to me Qtime) error message says there may be something wrong with the package error code 2738. I have Vista. Any suggestions will be welcomed.
