The Karate Kid (1984)
Jenna: After my brother and I started taking karate lessons Daddy bought this movie for us to watch. Before we watched this movie he kept saying “Wax on, wax off!”, “Wax on, wax off!” I thought he was acting weird, but he said I’d know what he was talking about after we watched the Karate Kid.
Daniel-san and his mom move to California from someplace far away, Daddy says New Jersey. They move to a crummy apartment somewhere and the pool is empty. He meets a few friends right away so it wasn’t so bad.
His new friends invite him to a beach party and he meets this nice girl named Ali. Daniel-san really likes her. They were having a good time until these mean boys show up on motocross bikes. I guess Ali used to go out with the leader of the mean boys. They take Ali’s radio and they beat up Daniel-san.
Later the bullies knock Daniel-san off his bike and he gets upset. His bike is messed up from the crash. The next day Daniel-san noticed his bike was fixed. There was this old guy who hung out in the storage shed trimming tiny trees, Daddy says they are Banzai trees. He fixed Daniel-san’s bike for him.
They become friends since his other new friends ditch him. On the way home from the school Halloween party the bullies trap Daniel-san and beat him up real bad. The old guy, Mr. Miyagi, jumped the fence and saved him. He really knows karate, he beat up all the bullies and they ran away.
Mr. Miyagi decides to teach Daniel-san karate so he can win a karate contest. Mr. Miyagi is from Japan and his dad taught him karate when he was a boy in Okinawa.
But first he made Daniel-san do a lot of chores. He had to wash cars, paint a fence, paint a house and sand the floor. Daddy said Mr. Miyagi had a nice house for a guy working as a handyman at a run down apartment complex.
Daniel-san learns that his chores where actually karate lessons. He practices this crazy bird looking kick on a post that is really cool. Daddy says if done right “there can be no defense”.
This movie was good, there is only one girl in the whole movie and she never gets to fight or beat up any mean boys.
Ethan: I like movies with karate fight scenes. There were only a couple of good scenes with fighting. This movie could use some more fighting.
Mr. Miyagi talks funny but he was a good at karate and he knows how to catch flies with chopsticks which is cool. Karate is great, but I still like light sabers better.
The boys that are mean to Daniel are really angry. Their karate teacher is really angry. I don’t know why they were so mad at Daniel. He never did anything to them.
The boy is a bathtub for Halloween. That’s not a very good costume. The mean boys dress like skeletons, I’d rather be the skeleton.
I go to karate school too like the boy in the movie, but we never get to do any fighting. We just get to kick foam and punch in the air.
